When Vicky’s mother, Angela, began to decline rapidly with Alzheimer’s, her father became her dedicated caregiver as she moved from the hospital to palliative care. If Vicky had known about Nurse Next Door and their three pillars of care, she believes her mother could have lived her remaining time in the comfort of her own home and her dad could have had much-needed respite care. Now, Vicky and Jeff are dedicated to helping other families and letting them know about Nurse Next Door and the option of private home care.
The Regional Municipality of York faces an unprecedented demographic shift as seniors become the fastest growing segment of the population. By 2031, the number of seniors is expected to top 310,000. Current projections indicate the percentage of seniors making up the region’s total population will expand from 12% in 2011 to 21% in 2031. A high proportion of York seniors report having chronic health conditions, such as arthritis and high blood pressure. It is expected that dementia among seniors will increase rapidly over the next 20 years.
As seniors age and their health declines, there will be an increasing demand for care support and a need for government and community partners to deliver responsive care programs and services. Our goal is to help inform families with decision-making about care for their loved ones and, as a result of providing this information, help them see how they can make important choices that result in improved care.
