Scott Jacobsen, partner in Nurse Next Door Home Health Care Services, reminded us all in his newsletter that last week was nurses week, in celebration of our much needed nurses. I chuckle each time I see Jacobsen's company name, as it so happens your columnist's much-appreciated next-door neighbours are nurses. On a more serious note, my husband and I have both had many experiences with nurses in two cities as some of our loved ones went through surgeries, and our fathers struggled through the aftermath of severe strokes. As Nurse Next Door reminded us in their recent newsletter:
- Nurses make up the majority of hospital staff and provide more primary care to patients than any other class of healthcare provider.
- Only about 56 percent of nurses work in hospitals. Others are employed in private practices, public clinics, public health organizations, home health care services and numerous other health-related organizations.
- It is estimated there will be a shortage of 22000 - 35000 nurses over the next 10 years in Canada.
- The average age of nurses in Canada is 45, and about 5 - 6 percent of nurses are male.
