Sharee Smalling-Leach, owner of Nurse Next Door Columbia, has dedicated her life to compassionate care, a journey that began when she became a Registered Nurse in 2004. With nearly two decades of experience, Sharee has developed a comprehensive understanding of healthcare, serving in diverse roles as an educator, supervisor, and administrator.
Her unwavering commitment to patient well-being was profoundly demonstrated in 2020 when she answered the call for first-line responders to combat the COVID-19 pandemic. For two years, Sharee worked tirelessly on the front lines, providing care to patients affected by the virus. This experience deeply impacted her, highlighting the significant negative effects of social isolation on hospitalized patients.
Driven by a profound passion for humanity and a belief that "caring is her superpower," Sharee's philosophy is rooted in treating others with the utmost respect and empathy, mirroring how she would wish to be treated herself. This ethos, coupled with her observations during the pandemic, inspired her to establish Nurse Next Door Columbia.
Sharee’s academic achievements further bolster her expertise. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, a Master's in Business Administration with a specialization in management, and a Master's in Nursing Education. These qualifications provide her with a unique blend of clinical knowledge, leadership skills, and an understanding of educational best practices.
Through Nurse Next Door Columbia, Sharee aims to provide high-quality, concierge non-medical in-home care, allowing patients to receive essential support and comfort in the familiar and reassuring environment of their own homes, surrounded by their families. Her vision is to mitigate the social isolation she witnessed during the pandemic, ensuring that those who need care can receive it with dignity and connection.

What if I need to speak to someone after business hours?
Our Care Services Center is open 24/7. Call anytime, and one of our Care Services Specialists will be happy to assist you.
When should we consider 24-hour home care?
Use this list to help you decide if continuous monitoring is something you should consider:
- The person doesn’t sleep through the night (or gets up more than 2-3 times per night).
- The person has difficulty moving around and is at a high risk of falls.
- The person was recently (or is about to be) discharged from the hospital and needs constant monitoring.
- The person’s spouse or relative is exhausted from helping day and night.

How much does Nurse Next Door cost?
Nurse Next Door's services vary in price depending on the level of care required and the Nurse Next Door Care team that services your area. To get a better idea of pricing in your area, speak to one of our Care Services Specialists—we're open any time, 24/7.
We also offer a complimentary Caring Consult™, during which one of our care designers will help you determine the amount of care you may require. We'll then work with you to balance your budget and needs and find a home care option for you.
Can I trial Nurse Next Door or do I have to sign a long-term contract?
You are not locked into a long-term contract as a Nurse Next Door client.
To try out Nurse Next Door, just contact us to book a complimentary, no-obligation Caring Consult™. One of our care designers will visit your home to assess your needs and design a care plan with you, including frequency and duration of care.
Are your home care services only for seniors?
No. We provide home care services to people of all ages. While our specialty is providing Happier Aging® experiences to seniors, we also assist with disability care, post-operative care, and more for children and adults.

Will I have the same Care Team all the time?
At Nurse Next Door, we strive to provide consistent care with regularly assigned caregivers. If your Caregiver isn’t available, we will ensure a suitable replacement that meets your unique needs.
Does Nurse Next Door conduct a background check for Caregivers?
Yes, all Nurse Next Door Caregivers are carefully screened with criminal background checks, vulnerable sector checks and reference checks. We verify our Caregivers' educational credentials upon hire and ensure, on an annual basis, that every Nurse is registered and in good standing with their respective College of Nurses.
