Neurodiversity is the idea that differences in brain function are natural variations in the human population.

A developmental disability is a substantial disability that begins before age 18 and is likely to need lifelong services. These can include conditions like autism, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, and intellectual disability.

The Lanterman Act is a California law that gives people with developmental disabilities the right to get the services and supports they need to live independent, productive lives in their communities. It established the regional center system to help provide these services.

To be eligible, a person must have a developmental disability that:

• Began before they were 18 years old.

• Is expected to last for life.

• Causes challenges in at least three of the following areas of daily life: self-care, language, learning, mobility, self-direction, capacity for independent living, or economic self-sufficiency.

A person with a mental health or learning disability diagnosis alone is not enough to qualify for regional center services. Family income and immigration status do not affect eligibility.
