Nurse Next Door Announces Grand Opening by Celebrating National Random Acts of Kindness Day

We’re proud to announce that Nurse Next Door is now operational in Lee’s Summit by local husband and wife time, Tom and Kathleen Chastain.

As the population continues to age, Missouri is expected to see an increase in seniors who need help. By 2030, this group is set to comprise more than 26% of the total population in the state. In order to provide care to seniors and provide peace of mind to children, Nurse Next Door will serve Missouri and the surrounding areas.

In true Happier Aging fashion, Tom and Kathleen Chastain along with their bright pink car will be at the Lee’s Summit HyVee at 310 SW Ward Rd from 12:00pm to 3:00 pm passing out flowers to community residents.

Having experienced first-hand the difficulties of being caregiver for their aging parents, who were diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, they understand the complex challenges and the need for quality home care in the community.

‘This is what 73 looks like’: Seniors embracing Pokémon GO

While plenty of young people have become obsessed with playing Pokémon GO, a local home care group is emphasizing the health benefits of the game for its senior clients.

Home care provider Nurse Next Door has been encouraging its senior patients to play the game to promote exercise, cognitive stimulation and interaction between different age groups. The game has also given their senior clients the opportunity to explore the city and have a greater sense of community.

“It gets everybody outside having some exercise, having some fun,” said Patrick Wyness with Nurse Next Door. “You’re playing a game so you’re using a bit of your mind.”

Some of the seniors say it’s even given them the opportunity to step outside their comfort zones.

“It’s actually quite fun,” said 73-year-old client Sue Sparlin. “I was talking to a fellow the other day with green hair and lots of piercings and I never would’ve talked to him before that. It’s an excuse to talk to people as well.”

Seniors and Pokémon Go?

It’s hard to go a day without hearing about Pokémon Go these days. This popular game is literally taking over every child, teenager, and young adult’s time. Although the  game’s popularity has received mixed reviews among the public – some praising its encouragement to get outside and get exercise with leaving others concerned about the safety hazards of playing the game – the positive aspects behind the game have immense potential to help seniors.

Nurse Next Door shot a video teaching a senior how to play and this caught the attention of the Huffington Post.
